With hair, you gotta take the time and work in clumps/strands. Study the flow of each and see how they relate to each other in terms of space and lighting. Lightly draw strands to start to shape the hair. Don't worry if it gets too dark. That's what erasers are for later. Keep going over, following the flow and keeping the strokes as long as needed. Layer the shadow smoothly. For the highlights, erase and blend. Go over the highlighted part and add few darker strands. Don't do too much, just enough so you can tell that it's still hair.

I also use the click eraser like a pencil to draw long highlighted strands, or blonde hairs. Just make sure you blend, blend, blend, and add light hair strokes.

The hair takes time and can take up as much as 50-60% of the project time. But with enough patience, focus, and persistence, you can achive realistic hair. Hope that helps.
